The page's most important function will be the brainstorming and discussing of potential PoMoHoWo questions, largely facilitated by members of the PoMoHoWo group.

To add a question for PoMoHoWo, post it on this page!

PoMoHoWo for the October 21st:

Consider the Mobius band we saw in class two weeks ago.

250px-Möbius_strip.jpg

a) List some of the properties of the Mobuis band in terms of its geometrical description.

b) How does cutting a line along the center of a Mobuis strip change it? Is it still a Mobius strip? Does it become two identical halves?

c) Can you think of some practical uses for a Mobius strip in real life? / Where may you have seen Mobius strips before?

PoMoHoWo due on October 10/7:

Chess Board (8x8):
1) Consider the following 8x8

Chess_BoardX

a) Which rotations map the chess board to itself? (with 0 ≤ θ < 2π)
b) Which line reflections map the chess board to itself (possibly switching colors)? Indicate these lines with a diagram. (You do not need to give equations of the lines.)
c) What translations of the pattern map the original pattern to itself?

2) Consider the following initial 8x8 chess board:

Chess_Initial_Board

a) Which transformations of the black pieces will produce an alignment identical to the alignment of the white pieces? (The answer is a composition of transformations.) Is this composition of transformations commutative? (Note: Your answer does not have to include specific quantities; just give general translations, reflections, and/or rotations.)

PoMoHoWo Ideas for the HW due October 7!!!

Not sure what kind of ideas you guys originally had in the discussion BUT, start with ideas now so we can have a question by Tuesday:
  • Someone mentioned a class about birthdays
  • Geometries of NYC? Of the subway system?
  • Geometries of NYU? (Sorry these are vague - I'm not really part of the PM team)
  • Mathematics as a Culture

Are PoMoHoWo ideas and questions testable material?

TL: No, they are not. The closest is that I may assign you a short essay on the exams, but the focus of this essay will be primarily related to the classical material from the textbook and lecture notes.
